HLTSS00064 - Apply basic principles and practices of Infection Prevention and Control

The ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need to protect against highly-infectious diseases. We are proud to offer this nationally accredited training to help minimise the impact of highly-infectious diseases in care settings, and assist with prevention and management of infection within our communities.

Icon Nationally Recognised Training

A set of skills to follow organisational infection prevention and control policies and procedures, including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to infection risks in the workplace. This skill set is for individuals who require the skills and knowledge to decrease the risk of and transmission of infection whilst carrying out their daily duties.


Course Duration: 2 months

Learners are given 2 months to complete all assessments including attending a 1-day face to face classroom session. This includes time required to complete online theory and assessment prior to attending a 1-day practical classroom session.


Study Commitment:  13 hours per week

It is anticipated that a learner would need to dedicate 13 hours per week. This time may include:
- Classroom training
- Assessment support sessions (online or in the classroom)
- 1:1 Coaching sessions
- Completing assessments
- Self-directed learning activities
- Self-directed research
- Work placement

The unit that this skill set covers is: HLTINF006 Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to follow organisational infection prevention and control procedures, including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to infection risks. This unit applies to individuals working in health and direct client care contexts.

  • Be the minimum age of 18 years old

  • Be proficient in the English language, with a good standard of literacy and numeracy skills

  • Have access to internet, webcam, email and MS Word, Adobe software and computer no older than 5 years

  • Complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy Evaluation

  • Classroom Training – 1 x 8-hour classroom session. Learning activities will reinforce theoretical knowledge, and workplace skills will be practiced and placed into context.

    Online Learning – Learners undertake a 16-hour online learning module that includes the theory components and formative assessments. 

    Assessment Support Sessions – Assessment support sessions will be offered to support learners in the completion of their assessments. Learners will be invited to attend either face to face sessions or online support sessions.

    Role Play/ Demonstration Assessment: Following completion of the classroom training session, learners are required to return to class to complete any Role Play, Demonstration and/or Practical assessment components not covered in the classroom sessions.

    Coaching Sessions – 1:1 Assessment Support sessions are scheduled, as required with up to 1 x1 hour session per learner over the duration of the course. 

    Self-paced Learning – Learners are encouraged to undertake 11 hours per week of self-paced learning throughout the duration of the course. This time may include classroom training, assessment support sessions (online or in the classroom), 1:1 coaching sessions, completing assessments, self-directed learning activities and self-directed research.

    Workplace Observation/Third Party Report – The workplace supervisor or manager will complete a report confirming competency on specific areas within the workplace.

    This skill set is for people working in various care and support roles in the community services industry who wish to develop skills for implementing infection control polices and procedures in the workplace.


    Students who believe they are already competent in parts of the course may apply for RPL. An application for RPL may only be made after enrolment and must be made using the RPL Application Form that will be provided. RPL is a form of assessment and requires the same application of the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence which are applied in any form of competency-based assessment.


    Credit Transfer

    Students who have completed units of this course at other registered training organisations will be given a credit transfer on presentation of a verified transcript, award or Statement of Attainment.
