Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of workers in the community and/or residential setting who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason. Work involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for own outputs. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

 

Duration: 16 months

Learners are given 16 months to complete all learning and assessments.

 

Study Commitment

It is anticipated that a student would need to dedicate 19 hours per week. This time can include:
- Classroom training
- Assessment support sessions (online or in the classroom)
- 1:1 Coaching sessions
- Completing assessments
- Self-directed learning activities
- Self-directed research
- Work placement

 

  • Be the minimum age of 18 years old

  • Be proficient in the English language, with a good standard of literacy and numeracy skills

  • Have access to internet, webcam, email and MS Word, Adobe software and computer no older than 5 years

  • Have a current National Police Check

  • Have a NDIS Workers Screening Check (required by some workplaces)

  • Have a current Working with Children Check (required by some workplaces)

  • Maintain reasonable physical health and fitness as the role involves a variety of physical tasks, including providing direct personal care including manual handling and other physically demanding activities. Students also require a level of maturity with a genuine interest in working with older people

  • Complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy Evaluation

  • Classroom Training – Classroom sessions are scheduled over a 16-month duration. (excluding scheduled holiday breaks). Learning activities will reinforce theoretical knowledge, and workplace skills will be practiced and placed into context. Note: Refer to Training Schedule.

    Assessment Support Sessions – Compulsory Assessment Support Sessions are offered to support learners in the completion of their assessments. Learners must attend online assessment support sessions as per their training schedule. Note: Refer to Training Schedule

    eLearning Modules – Each unit of competency includes eLearning modules related to the topic. These must be completed in between attending classroom sessions as directed by the trainer/assessor.  These modules are designed to reinforce theoretical concepts and will prepare learners with knowledge prior to attending the classroom sessions.

    Coaching Sessions – Additional and optional 1:1 coaching sessions can be scheduled, as required with up to maximum of 4 x 1-hour sessions per learner over the duration of the course.

    Work Placement – A total of 120 hours of work placement is undertaken throughout the duration of the course. Learners will complete their work placement as Home and Community Support Workers. Meditech Training College will organise the work placement for all learners in either Home and Community support work with Meditech Staffing or in a Home and Community support organisation. If requested, we can also organise work placement in an Aged Care Support worker in an Aged Care Facility. Learners will be supervised during their work placement by an allocated workplace supervisor.

    Workplace Observation – The Trainer/Assessor schedules at two visits to each learner at their work placement location, where practical demonstration is observed and assessed. It is anticipated that Trainer/Assessor will need to visit the learner in the workplace at least twice to conduct observation of workplace activities for these units and confirm competency with the Workplace Supervisor. If more visits are required, these will be coordinated with the employer and learner to ensure the learner is given access to clients that meet the support needs addressed in the assessment for the following units which are assessed during these visits.

    Our specialised Certificate III in Individual Support qualification reflects a variety of job roles in the community services industry. These avenues include: Assistant in nursing, Community Care Worker, Disability Service Officer, In-Home Respite worker, Accommodation Support Worker, Community House Worker, Lifestyle Assistant, Home Care Assistant, Residential Care/Support Worker.

    RPL

    Students who believe they are already competent in parts of the course may apply for RPL. An application for RPL may only be made after enrolment and must be made using the RPL Application Form that will be provided. RPL is a form of assessment and requires the same application of the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence which are applied in any form of competency-based assessment.

     

    Credit Transfer

    Students who have completed units of this course at other registered training organisations will be given a credit transfer on presentation of a verified transcript, award or Statement of Attainment.
